MKS Request Demonstration
Input Information

The values retrieved from and stored into Cranium are organized into objects, i.e., 'chunks' of information. The objects used are requests, entities, properties, and data. These objects are exchanged using JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) which is a text-based database format. An example request object in JSON format is shown in the window to the right.

Request Object

The outer set of braces denotes a request object. There is one and only one request object. A request has the following attributes:

  • Version: a string that denotes the JSON version being used to report values. As we update our JSON format we will update the version number.
  • MKSJSONID: this is unique string used to identify that the JSON request was obtained from Molecular Knowledge Systems.
  • ExportDate: the date and time at which the request object was created.
  • Entities: an array of entity objects.

Entity Object

An Entity, e.g., a chemical or mixture, contains information on a particular chemical, mixture, reference, or other object found in Cranium. An Enity has the following attibutes:

  • Identifier: the name of the entity. An entity's identifier must always be entered in an input request and will always be provide in a result request.
  • IdentifierReference: a short string identifying the reference from which this entity's name was obtained.
  • IdentifierComment: a string containing any information associated with this entity's identifier.
  • EntityType: specifies what kind of object this entity is. Possible entity types are: Chemical; Mixture; Reference.
  • Properties: an array of property objects.
Property Object

A Property, e.g., normal boiling point or liquid viscosity, contains information on the property and an array of data values. A Property has the following attibutes:

  • Name: the name of the Property.
  • Status: a value of either 'Active', 'Passive', 'Rejected', 'Unknown', 'Estimated', or 'New Estimate'.
  • Component: come properties, e.g., the activity coefficient, are specific to a component in a mixture. The 'Component' attribute specified the zero-based index of the component in the mixture.
  • DataType: the name of the class of the property's datum objects. Knowing a datum's class can inform you about the datum's attributes.
  • Data: an array of datum objects. All of these objects will be of the type given by the DataType attribute.
Datum Object

The Datum is the basic value-containing object used to exchange information with Cranium. A Datum can have a variety of different attributes depending upon its containing Property object. The most common datum objects contain the following attributes.

  • Value: the value of the datum may be a string, integer, or floating point number.
  • ValueAccuracy: a non-negative number that represents the accuracy of the datum's value.
  • ValueUnits: the units in which the datum's value and value accuracy are given.
  • Temperature: the temperature at which the datum value was determined.
  • TempAccuracy: a non-negative number that represents the accuracy of the datum's temperature value.
  • TempUnits: the units in which the datum's temperature and temperature accuracy are given.
  • Pressure: the pressure at which the datum value was determined.
  • PresAccuracy: a non-negative number that represents the accuracy of the datum's pressure value.
  • PresUnits: the units in which the datum's pressure and pressure accuracy are given.
  • XValues: an array containing the composition of each component in a mixture entity.
  • XAccuracies: an array containing the accuracy of each composition value.
  • XUnits: the units in which the datum's compositions and composition accuracies are given.
